Color Formats
Web colors can be expressed in several formats. HEX, RGB, and HSL are the three most common formats used in CSS and design tools. Each represents the same color differently, and converting between them is essential for front-end development workflows.
HEX, RGB, HSL
HEX (#rrggbb) encodes red, green, and blue channels as two hexadecimal digits each (00–ff), e.g. #3b82f6. RGB (rgb(r, g, b)) expresses each channel as an integer from 0 to 255, e.g. rgb(59, 130, 246). HSL (hsl(h, s%, l%)) uses hue (0–360°), saturation (0–100%), and lightness (0–100%) — a more intuitive model for adjusting colors, e.g. hsl(217, 91%, 60%).
